Sex Addict Treatment
Sex addicts may have difficulty acknowledging that they have a problem, particularly if they have yet to suffer significant consequences. Unfortunately, once enough consequences have occurred, most sex addicts will be unable to change their behavior on their own. Just as with drug and alcohol addiction, sex addiction involves changes in brain chemistry that cannot be overcome simply by willpower. In order for an individual to recover from a sex addiction it is usually necessary to enter into treatment. Typically, a patient will undergo treatment at a residential facility for 28 days possibly followed by longer term outpatient treatment. After the initial inpatient treatment, many sex addicts find it useful to attend sex addicts anonymous meetings or see a therapist on a regular basis or both. Like any addiction, recovery from sex addiction requires long term lifestyle changes in order to be successful. In treatment, patients will receive both private and group counseling and learn how to effectively take responsibility for abstaining from compulsive sex once they are discharged.
