Crack Addiction
Crack addiction has been a devastating problem in the United States since the 1980s. Because it is a powerful stimulant that can produce a positive outlook in the user, crack, also called crack cocaine, is often abused when an individual needs an easy escape from academic, job-related, or other daily stressors. Crack use sends positive signals to the brain's reward centers, which leads to addiction. Because crack is a less expensive, altered form of cocaine, many people have the misconception that this addiction is limited to certain regional areas or social groups; but anyone can become addicted to crack.
The beginning of most addictions may seem harmless: a way to socialize and have a good time. Yet the benefits that a user perceives the drug to have are quickly outweighed by serious consequences as recreational use escalates to addiction. Even recreational use can lead to serious medical complications like heart attacks, strokes, seizures, and malnutrition, among others. After the addiction threshold has been crossed, it is extremely unlikely that the individual will be able to return to a drug-free life without the help of a professional intervention, treatment, and a recovery program.
