SIGNS/EFFECTS OF USE: For medical uses, Ketamine can be injected, smoked, swallowed, or inhaled. Though it can be used as an anesthetic, its ability to cause hallucinations has made it more of an alternative instead of a first choice of physicians. Ketamine has been used in the treatment of depression, addiction, and reflex sympathetic dystrophy as well. It is also used in veterinary medicine. As a recreational drug, Ketamine is particularly popular with in the rave scene. Often combined with Ecstasy (MDMA) and/or gamma hydroxy butyrate (GHB), Ketamine is sold illegally in liquid or powder form. Users may inhale it or inject it, or add it to a beverage. Some users may mix it with tobacco or marijuana and smoke it in a pipe. Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic, which means that it makes the user feel detached from his or her environment, a feeling that many users crave. The psychotic state that it induces can resemble schizophrenia, and, for this reason, Ketamine has been used in the study of schizophrenia. Some users report states of heightened physical awareness and spiritual/psychic consciousness. Other side effects of use may include blurred vision, slurred speech, confusion, dizziness, short-term memory loss, insomnia, and anxiety. WITHDRAWAL: Ketamine can cause both physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms. To make a user as comfortable and safe as possible, professional detox is highly recommended. Among the possible symptoms are anxiety, insomnia, paranoia, panic, irritability, nausea, muscle rigidity, seizures, and numbness.
