Question: I put my 22yr. old son out today after catching him snorting oxycontin. In college,a couple of months ago, he was caught by police with 30 pills and arrested. He is currently involved in the probation system and going to AA and complying with all of the system requirements. He, by the court, is to be living with us. Today I felt I had no option but to have him pack up and leave. I am troubled, do you have any advice?

Answer: Oxycontin is an extremely addictive drug, particularly when taken intranasally (snorted), and legal consequences are often not enough for someone to stop. As a family member it is hard to know what the right decision is when it comes to setting boundries with an addict. Unfortunately, there is no simple answer that applies to every situation. For this reason, family members of addicts sometimes find it beneficial to see a therapist of their own to help them address these issues.
