Answer to your Question

Question: My husband admitted that he is addicted to pain pills and wants to get treatment. We have a newborn son and can't afford the treatment he will need. Is there any way that he can get free outpatient treatment?

Answer: Depending on where you live there may be free or low cost treatment available. You can visit the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Agency website (http://www.samhsa.gov/) to see what is available in your area. If your husband has good health insurance it is also possible that a substantial part of the cost of treatment may be covered. You will need to call the insurer to find out. If your husband is a veteran, the VA has many excellent resources. Your husband can also go to a Narcotics Anonymous (http://www.na.org/) or Alcoholics Anonymous (http://www.aa.org/) meeting in your area. These are free, self-run meetings of recovering addicts that have helped many people to achieve long term sobriety. He can find a meeting in your area by visiting the websites. Your husband should also see his doctor to ensure that he withdraws safely from the medication he has been taking.
