Answer to your Question

Question: My husband is an adderall addict that has a prescription for the drug but buys additional pills on the street. He has become a different person. He admits that he has a problem, but avoids anyone who will confront him. He had a history of drug abuse and the Dr. was told about it, but said that as far as he was concerned he didn't hear it and the Dr. hasn't seen him for an appointment in four years, but keeps giving him prescriptions for 60 mg of adderall and 20mg of Ritalin as a daily dosage for narcolepsy. Is that normal?

Answer: Adderall and Ritalin are indicated for the treatment of narcolepsy but they do both have the potential for abuse. Without knowing more details of your husband's history it would not be appropriate to make judgments about his current therapy but it is concerning that he has not been evaluated in over 4 years. It is always well within your rights to seek a second opinion from another physician.
