Answer to your Question

Question: My mom is addicted to prescription drugs. My dad sent her to rehab and she agreed to do it and she came back home all better and now she is the same way she was before she went down there. What can i do to help her get off of the pills?

Answer: Unfortunately, relapse is very common in recovery from addiction. This does not mean, however, that relapse is an unavoidable or necessary part of recovery, just that relapse does not mean a person has failed recovery. Many in addiction medicine describe addiction as a chronic illness like diabetes that requires on-going, long-term treatment in order to remain under control. Under this view, addiction is not cured but kept in remission by regular treatment. Just as someone with diabetes can remain symptom-free if they take their medications and maintain a healthy lifestyle, a recovering addict or alcoholic can stay sober and happy so long as they continue to participate in their recovery.
