Answer to your Question

Question: My son confessed that he had a drug problem and needed help. We were thinking maybe marijuarna. It turns out he had been using oxycontin for about 6 months. The last 2 he turned to snorting and shooting up. He has quit cold turkey and has not been out of our house. He has no money and no way to get it. We have him under complete supervision and he went for his first counseling session yesterday. We are scheduled again for Friday and next Tuesday. He said he will do weekly drug test. What are the statistics of him staying drug-free. Especially since it has not been and extreme long term use?

Answer:

Studies have shown that the best predictor of success is the amount of time in treatment.  In one review, only about 28% of opioid addicts remain in treatment in the first year.  Using OxyContin IV is extrememly addictive, and requires a great deal of support to stay sober.  This includes regular drug counseling, therapy, medical assessment, and participation in 12-step groups, such as Narcotics Anonymous.  Obtaining a sponsor in the 12-step process is also crucial.  This is a dangerous addiction, and it requires a high level of treatment and support.
