Answer: Unfortunately, this scenario is not uncommon. As a person’s addiction progresses it often becomes increasingly difficult for them to maintain their work or school responsibilities, and their relationships with friends and family who do not use drugs often begin to deteriorate. No one can be forced into rehab and unless the individual wants to stop using drugs, the chances of a lasting recovery are slim. However, it is possible to stage an intervention where the addict is confronted by friends and family with the help of a professional interventionist who shows the addict the consequences of their addiction. It is hoped that after this experience the addict will willingly decide to enter a treatment program, but it is always possible that they will not and an intervention does not guarantee success. If your daughter’s behavior changed suddenly, it is also possible that she may have a psychiatric condition like bipolar disorder in addition to her drug addiction. To pursue this possibility you would need to consult with your primary care doctor or a psychiatrist.
