Question: What do I say to a family member that has been an addict for over 25 years and is now sober and clean, but has caused me a ton of pain and embarresmanet of those years?

Addiction SpecialistAnswer: In the twelve step recovery model (e.g. Alcoholics Anonymous) recovering alcoholics and drug addicts are encouraged to "make amends" to those they have hurt in the past. You are not under any obligation to forgive them and their recovery does not depend on your doing so.
