The Rave Scene

A rave is a dance party that may last all night. Attendees may be attracted to a rave by a famous electronic music DJ who may be playing. The music may be supplemented by special lighting effects.

How long have raves existed?

Raves became popular in the 1980s, originated in the UK. Their popularity quickly spread around the world.

Who attends raves?

Raves are popular among individuals of all age groups who like dancing and the music that is playing/being performed.

What happens at a rave?

In addition to dancing, socializing, and enjoying music, raves have come to be known as venues of heavy drinking and the use of illicit drugs by some (but by no means all) attendees. Among the most popular drugs used at raves are MDMA (ecstasy), LSD, Ketamine, mushrooms, and GHB. Ecstasy, in particular, increases the user's perception of being connected with those around them, and, therefore, is a popular choice in such a highly social environment. Raves in the United States have developed their own culture. For example, many rave attendees value such things as respect, unity, and peace.

Where are raves held?

Because of the large crowds such events tend to attract, raves are usually held in large, open spaces such as warehouses, clubs, baseball fields, and other spaces that can accommodate many people. The frequent use of illegal drugs at these parties means that many of them attempt to “hide” themselves in some way. Underground raves are not licensed by any authority. Semi-underground raves, on the other hand, may occur at facilities that either do not realize the potential for illegal activity or overlook it due to financial need. While above ground have the benefit of openly selling alcohol, they also have clear closing times, and, unlike the case of underground raves where attendees will sleep off a high, above ground rave attendees are often forced to go home while still intoxicated.

Are drugs sold at raves?

Depending on whether or not any business is assuming liability for the rave (i.e., an underground rave vs. an aboveground rave), drugs may or may not be available for sale at the actual event. In some cases, the substances may be sold in the parking lot to avoid having to make a sale inside the venue, or to avoid passing security.
