Drug Addiction

Drug addiction is a very complex illness that can affect anyone. Unless you have experienced an addiction, it can be very difficult to understand addictive behavior. Family and friends might be frustrated because they believe the solution is simple – just stop. But, unfortunately, by the time others begin to realize there is a problem, addiction has usually become so deeply rooted in the addict’s life that the solution is not so straightforward. Before an addict develops addiction – that is, has a compulsive need for a substance or behavior – their behavior may seem completely harmless. Perhaps the addict began taking drugs for an injury or medical problem; perhaps it was infrequent, recreational use for social reasons. But at some point, the behavior increases in frequency and/or severity, and the end result is a devastating dependency.

The Medical Understanding of drug addiction has developed significantly in the past few decades. At one point in time, addicts were considered bad people; they were the targets of religious and criminal reform programs, and, when these programs failed as they often did, they were permanently incarcerated. Today, addiction is classified as a disease, and addicts are not perceived as bad people, but as sick people in need of professional help.

Once a person has crossed the line between recreational or medical use and drug addiction, it is very difficult for them to find the path to recovery on their own. In almost many cases, the only option is to put a drug intervention, treatment, and recovery program in place.
