Drug Treatment
Treatment for drug addiction is a complex process. But before treatment can begin, the addict needs to both recognize and accept that they have a problem with the drug. Many drug addicts eventually come to this point on their own, but often only after suffering major consequences to their work, health, and relationships. Earlier in the course of addiction, most drug addicts will be in denial when confronted by individual friends or family members. In these cases, the most effective way to get a drug addict to accept help is through a professionally guided drug intervention.
Once the addict has decided on their own or agreed after an intervention to enter a treatment facility, they will first undergo a medically supervised detox process. The remainder of their time in the facility will be occupied with rehab programs such as counseling and structured activities. The role of the family will vary depending on the program and the rules of the facility.
Following discharge, recovering addicts need to commit to important lifestyle changes. They may need to end friendships with those who had encouraged their addiction. They should also take advantage of resources offered in their community such as continued counseling or groups like Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous. Part of the rehab process will be to help the addict learn how to find and make us of the community resources best suited to them and to effectively take responsibility for maintaining their sobriety. Unlike before they began the recovery process, they will now have the knowledge, experience, and strength to take the right steps in treating their disease. Recovery from addiction can be a difficult process, but with the right approach, freedom from the devastating effects of this disease is possible.
